Chemin de Nietzsche i Èze är fantastiskt om du vill ha en enkel men tröttsam vandring i uppförsbacke samtidigt som du njuter av vacker havsutsikt från ovan. Turen tur och retur på den 427 meter höga före detta mulestigen kommer att ta cirka tre timmar, och stundtals är den stenig och ganska ansträngande, men inte för en någorlunda vältränad person. Men det som verkligen gör dig andfådd är det känslomässiga svep som verkar bära och lyfta dig, särskilt på nedstigningen, när kusten avslöjar sig och hoppar rakt upp från kalkstensklipporna.

Vandringen

Èze Village ligger cirka 430 meter över havet, vilket tar cirka en timme att ta sig uppför (eller 40 minuter nedför) om du är en mer målmedveten vandrare eller cirka en och en halv timme om du väljer ett avslappnat tempo. Det snabbaste du kan ta dig upp är 30 minuter om du är snabb. Det är förvisso en av de tuffaste promenaderna i området med sin branta lutning och många trappor, men allt det arbetet gör utsikten på toppen ännu sötare.

The trail connects Èze-sur-Mer (on the main road above the beach) to the picturesque hilltop Èze Village. You can start your route straight opposite the train station in Èze-sur-Mer, where there are plenty of places to park your car, or start in Èze Village and work your way down to the beach (to get to the beach you must take the tunnel under the road, accessible from the north side of the road by the real estate agency).

If you start in Èze Village, the first part of the trail through Le Vallon du Due-the Duke’s Valley-has remnants of paving, and without the correct footwear, the loose gravel renders this the most perilous part of the journey (you can do the walk in sturdy sneakers, but I always bring hiking shoes when traveling)•

The trail soon becomes stone and dirt, and as you descend, the path plays tricks, turning sharply and vanishing, while a seemingly new one opens to expose a fresh slice of sky and a sliver of the Mediterranean. The air is a perfume of rosemary, rock rose blossoms, olive trees, and myrtle, all of which cluster here and there near the path. Butterflies flit about as they have for thousands of years. And then there are the crags that rear and loom to form the twisted walls of the valleys, some of which also disappear sideways. At times, the sheer grandeur of the rock faces seems almost on the scale of Yosemite. Soon, the sea appears in full, jutting out from the valley in a perfect V, and the trail extends to the main road, crossing over to a white stretch of sand.

As mentioned above, you may also do this walk in reverse; start at the beach and work your way up, but if you’re not feeling adventurous enough for a round-trip, you can catch a bus in either direction from Èze Village back to the train station and the coast.

If you’ve walked down, it’s a good idea at least in summer to bring a bathing suit, because you’ll want to cool off in the gentle surf. The trek back up is steep in parts, and the cliffs that seemed like friendly giants on the way down now seem a tad forbidding.

Remember to look up, because the stone facades of Èze Village begin to emerge like characters out of a fairy tale through the leaf cover. The path zigs and zags, and soon, the bell tower of Notre-Dame de l’Assomption seems to rise straight out of a giant spur. Behind you, and off to the right, is the sea again, a soothing wash of blue.

It was the early 1880s, and for a time he was ensconced on the sunny coast between Nice and Genoa, suffering from failing eyesight, melancholy, and burgeoning madness. If he had been able to find joy at all in his tormented life, he found it here.

This walk may inspire you to bone up on your Nietzche. Maybe you skipped most of your Philosophy IOI lectures or never quite got acquainted with the man most famously known (and misunderstood) for the declaration that “God is dead.” It’s worth it. Thus Spoke Zsirathustra is about a prophet who descends from a mountain to offer his wisdom to the world, and it’s not a stretch to see how this climb, these boulders, this ascent from the sea to the Eagle’s Nest inspired the philosopher to produce his greatest work.

"Min muskeltonus var alltid störst när mina kreativa energier flödade som mest", skrev han om sina dagliga uppförsbackar från tågstationen. "Kroppen är pigg - låt oss lämna 'själen' ur spel. Man kunde ofta ha sett mig dansa." Eller bara stanna för att lukta på rosmarin.

Användbara tips

Bär rätt skor för att få bättre grepp och undvika att halka. Gå inte om det regnar eftersom stenarna blir hala. Ta med mycket vatten och solkräm eftersom stigen på många ställen är utsatt för den strålande sommarsolen. Börja tidigt eller senare på dagen för att förhindra det starkaste eftermiddagssolljuset (från cirka 10:30 till 16:30 på sommaren).

Hur man kommer dit

Tåg från Nice till Eze: Om du anländer med tåg kommer det att släppa dig nära botten av Nietzsche-vägen. Kostnaden för tåget är €3,50 enkel resa. Du kan antingen vandra tillbaka ner för att återvända med tåg eller ta bussen vid foten av byn för att återvända till Nice.

Buss från Nice till Eze: Buss #100 från Nice kommer att släppa av dig nära tågstationen, nära Nietzsche-vägen.

Buss mellan Eze-sur-Mer och Eze Village: Buss #82 eller #112 kommer att släppa av dig vid foten av byn. Det är lite av en stigning upp till byn från stan men inte alltför ansträngande. Detta är det närmaste du kan komma byn Eze med kollektivtrafik. Det är också här den allmänna parkeringen ligger. Kostnaden är 1,50 € enkel resa eller 10 € för ett pass med 10 biljetter som är giltigt för både bussar och spårvagnar.

Best Time to Visit

Vintern är en underbar tid att besöka Eze. Byn kommer inte att vara överfull av turister, och du kommer att känna att du har hela platsen för dig själv. De flesta butiker, gallerier och restauranger stänger dock för vintersäsongen. Ett lyxhotell är dock fortfarande öppet, så du kan fortfarande ta en drink eller en måltid med utsikt över havet. Om du är intresserad av att shoppa i byn, bör du överväga att besöka en annan tid på året. Våren eller hösten är inte för varmt, perfekt för shopping, och blommorna kommer att blomma för fullt. Sommaren är den hektiska säsongen och kan bli mycket trångt.

Having visited Vieux Eze we decided that walking to Eze-sur-Mer to catch the train would be a pleasant alternative to queuing for a packed bus. Big mistake. We expected rough terrain but this path is really quite difficult to negotiate in parts unless you are an experienced hill walker. The sign at the start of the path said it was a 45 minute walk but it took us an hour and a half and there were times when we thought we would end up spending the night on the mountain. You come out right near the Garmund perfume store. Then hike back down to car. Overall great 1/2 day activity.”
