La proprietà e il castello

La proprietà esistente è costituita da un vasto spazio verde denominato Giardino del Re dove sorgono la Casa del Governatore, la Casa dei Metayers e La Tour. La sontuosa casa sull'isola vanta 17 camere da letto, un cinema, un eliporto privato e persino una discoteca. Dispone inoltre di diverse ville, una grande piscina, giardini e un piccolo castello all'interno della proprietà. Il tutto è protetto da una cinta muraria costruita su ordine dell' Il cardinale Richelieu.

I vari edifici furono edificati tra il XII e il XVII secolo e, fino a tempi recenti, hanno avuto solo proprietari storici, da i monaci di Lérins al re di Francia, Luigi 14, tramite la Duca di Guisa or the Governor of Provence but also the mayor of Marseille, after the Revolution.

Più recentemente, era di proprietà del capo di Presse della Cité, poi, nel 1983, è stato acquistato da Claude Muller, che non vi soggiornava dal 1991.

Il truffatore

Nel 2008 è stata acquistata per circa 40 milioni di euro, tramite un prestito bancario inadempiente, da un magnate indiano degli affari Vijay Mallya. Mallya made his fortune in spirits (United Breweries) and air transport (Kingfisher company), and is now a cricket and Formula 1 team owner.

Since then, Mallya has become a fugitive and is the subject of an extradition effort by the Indian Government to return him from the UK to face charges of financial crimes in India.

Mallya, who was known as the “King of Good Times” in India, was arrested in London in April 2017 for defrauding at least 17 Indian banks of billions of dollars, drawing loans that he intended to default on, using his now defunct airline as collateral. He allegedly routed this money into personal assets and to gain full or partial stake in about 40 companies abroad.

Entro settembre 2015, la proprietà di 1,3 ettari sull'isola francese Isola Santa Margherita “had fallen into disrepair,” the bank’s lawyer Gideon Shirazi said in court documents. Unsuitable interior designers and builders engaged to carry out repairs at the property left it in a worse state, he said.

Su richiesta di Mallya di prorogare il prestito, la banca ha incaricato Knight Frank di ispezionare la proprietà e gli agenti immobiliari hanno stimato che il valore fosse sceso da 10 milioni di euro a 30 milioni di euro. Secondo la banca, a gennaio 2018 i lavori sulla proprietà erano ancora incompleti.

The Sale

Dieci anni dopo l’acquisto da parte del truffatore, nel 2018, l’immobile è stato nuovamente messo sul mercato, chiedendo 45 milioni di euro. La vendita a Collezione Ultima (a 5-star hotelier) was finalized on July 1, 2020. It was sold discreetly “at the bar of the commercial court as part of a legal settlement” and without the knowledge of the municipality, according to the town hall of Cannes. Even DVF didn’t publish the sale price.

“This is the umpteenth cession of this site and (it) has always been closed to the public,” Mayor LR David Lisnard said. “There will be no hotel!”, he assured, recalling that the local urban plan prohibited it.

In the end, the property was kept private and is being rented as a private vacation rental.
