Saint Paul de Vence Travel Guide
Perched on a rocky spur about 20 km northwest of Nice, Saint-Paul-de-Vence is routinely listed among the prettiest villages on the Côte d’Azur. For a community of barely 300 residents in the walled village, it draws an eye-popping 2.5 million visitors a year—close to the numbers for Versailles or Mont-Saint-Michel—which means the cobbled lanes inside its 16th-century walls can feel jam-packed in high season.
Art is the main magnet. Around forty or fifty galleries and studios line Rue Grande and its side streets, and the Fondation Maeght sits just above the village. The artistic buzz dates back to the 20th-century masters who lived or lingered here—Chagall (who is buried in the village cemetery), Picasso, Matisse, Braque, Léger, Calder—many of whom traded canvases for room and board at the famed Colombe d’Or .
A reality check, though: much of today’s gallery scene chases quick sales to day-trippers. Window after window is crammed with bright, decorative pieces that look like variations on the same formula—“step-and-repeat” art designed to be attractive to tourists.
The walls exist in a spade-like shape surrounding the town, housing the 300 locals that reside inside. The remaining population lives in the valleys and heights, many residing in luxurious villas. Gardens, orchards, villas and far-off mountains adorn the picture-perfect views from the heights of the village.
Place du General da Gaulle begroet de bezoekers voor de poort naar het autovrije dorp. Budget several hours to explore the town, and wear comfortable walking shoes. While you can speed-walk through the old town in 30 minutes, you’ll want to take it slow and have a look in the many art galleries and churches, and saver a croissant or cocktail on a terrace overlooking the hills and sea.

De muur
For a millennium, the walls of St-Paul de Vence have surrounded the now cobbled streets, giving unfailing protection to the heritage that stood the test of time. It is still under siege, not by those who seek to conquer, but by those who want to fill their aesthetic longing.
Oude koninkrijken vertrouwden op muren voor bescherming en verdediging. Honderden en zelfs duizenden jaren lang waren zij getuige van verschillende belegeringen en aanvallen die werden uitgevoerd ter wille van macht en macht. De sterken overleefden en de zwakken brokkelden af. Veel van die muren vormen het bewijs voor die momenten in de geschiedenis. Maar sommige zijn niet alleen verlaten monumentale bouwwerken en ruïnes. During the Middle Ages, St-Paul de Vence occupied a strategic location. Initially, it was built as a protection from Saracen pirate raids. It became an important strategic location as Nice shifted its allegiance from Provence to Savoy in the 14th century. The ramparts were erected then to fortify the stronghold, and two of the original towers are still standing; Porte de Vence and Tour de l’Esperon.
By the 16th century, consecutive attacks prompted François I to reinforce the defenses. In 1524 the King of Spain Charles V occupied St-Paul and besieged it again in 1536 because of its importance on the play of powers in Europe. François I made a treaty with Nice and had the Commander of Artillery Jean de Renaud de Saint-Remy work on the fortifications between 1543 and 1547. They put French spurs on the bastions (called orillons) om de twee poorten te beschermen, samen met vliesgevels om de flanken te bewaken.
De Grote Fontaine
De fontein werd in 1615 gebouwd door Melchior Martin, een plaatselijke steenhouwer. Dit plein was ooit een markt en een belangrijk herkenningspunt tijdens de middeleeuwen. Het staat sinds 1850 op de monumentenlijst van de Franse Rivièra. Sinds de bouw heeft het dorp een constante drinkwatervoorziening gehad.
Het gemeentehuis
Het oudste van de monumenten in St-Paul, het gemeentehuis heeft een bel bovenaan de toren met een Latijnse inscriptie, “hora est jam de sommo suggere”, wat betekent ‘de uren nodigen ons uit om te dromen’.
Lokaal Historisch Museum
Het 'Museé de l'Histoire Locale de St-Paul de Vence' is a must-see. Wax figures of historical persons like King François I and Queen Jeanne gather in this ancient village house to commemorate the history of St-Paul de Vence. Kids will enjoy the dioramas in costumes.
Kapel des Pénitents Blancs
De 17e-eeuwse 'Chapelle des Pénitents Blancs' staat bij de lokale bevolking bekend als Folon-kapel, na Jean Michel Folon, de Belgische kunstenaar die het interieur versierde met zijn kunst. Op straat is het een bescheiden oude kerk, maar de decoratie binnenin is bijna lichtgevend. Folon werkte samen met ambachtslieden om de glas-in-loodramen te maken en versierde de kapel met schilderijen, sculpturen en levendige mozaïeken. De kapel is een buitengewone toegangspoort tot de wereld van Folon en communiceert zijn fascinatie voor licht en het spirituele. Je zult ook zien hoeveel disciplines Folon beheerste, van schilderkunst en beeldhouwkunst tot keramiek, wandtapijten en glaswerk.
Eglise Collegiale
De dorpskerk werd gebouwd in de 14e eeuw. Het behoudt zijn koor en vier pijlers die dateren uit de Romaanse kerk. De bisschop van Vence verhief het in 1666 tot collegiale status. De belangrijkste attractie zijn de overblijfselen uit de catacomben in Rome, fresco's en barokkunst.
Stichting Maeght Kunstmuseum
Ensconced in a pine forest on the Colline des Gardettes hill above St Paul de Vence, the Fondation Maeght is a modern art museum of a caliber that you won’t come across very often, which is why the museum attracts over 200,000 visitors each year.
Het museum ligt buiten de muren van St-Paul de Vence. . You’ll need to take a 10 to 20-minute walk from the town on the wooded hills among the dark pines to reach it. From the bus stop, you can see the signs that point to the way. Coming from the lower lot, a shortcut on a steep dirt path through the trees leads directly to the green gate in front of the ticket booth.

The Ancient Cemetery & St-Michel Chapel
Geen erg toeristische plek om te bezoeken, maar toch belangrijk omdat het de plek is waar Marc Chagall tot rust komt . Hij stierf in 1985, nadat hij 19 jaar in St-Paul had gewoond. Het is ook de thuisbasis van de oudste kerk van de stad, uit de 12e eeuw.

De Boomhutten
St Paul de Vence is de thuisbasis van een van de meest unieke accommodaties die je ooit zult vinden: de Orion boomhutten . Vervoer naar St-Paul de Vence
De Nice luchthaven is a 25-minute drive away. Bus #400 runs between St-Paul and Nice once or twice per hour. Car parking is only available at the Fondation Maeght museum and a couple of other car parks around the town, and no cars or bikes are allowed in the old town itself.
Practical tip: parking is the village’s weak spot. The main municipal lots at the base of the ramparts often fill by late morning, and the steep upper car parks overflow soon after. Arrive early, consider taking an Uber, or be ready for a wait and a walk uphill. Once you’re through the stone gate, though, the terracotta rooftops, panoramas over the coastal plains, and lingering scent of jasmine usually make the hassle fade quickly.
Nearby towns are Cages-sur-Mer (a 20-minute drive), Nice (a 30-minute drive), Antibes (a 35-minute drive) and Cannes (a 40-minute drive).
